The dream of building Sleepy Hollow Golf Course originated at a party in 1966. There were a group of gentlemen talking about how crowded the city courses were and one of them said, “if I had any land I would seriously consider building a golf course here in Oldham County.” Hearing him make that statement started the golf ball rolling.
I graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1958 with a degree in agriculture. After graduation, I worked on my father’s farm from 1958 to 1967. My wife Judy and myself enjoyed farming, but we had three children and we were struggling financially. That was when we decided to pursue the thought of building a golf course. I approached my father and told him what my plans were – to build a golf course. He looked at me as though I had lost my mind. After several days of persuasion he agreed to let my wife and me follow our dream.
The next part of this dream was finding a golf course architect. We had a friend who knew a gentleman named Harold England. We contacted Mr. England and he went on to design and build our nine-hole course in 1967. We opened Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in the spring of 1968 and this year, 2018, we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary.
